New Delhi: Renowned former India opener Aakash Chopra has expressed confidence in the potential return of Varun Chakaravarthy to India’s T20I squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Chopra commended the mystery spinner for his outstanding performance in the second T20I against Bangladesh in Delhi on October 9.

The Men in Blue set the Bangla Tigers a daunting target of 222 runs after batting first, with Chakravarthy contributing significantly by taking 2 wickets for just 19 runs in four overs, helping restrict the visitors to 135/9 and securing an 86-run victory.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra suggested that Varun Chakravarthy could have secured a spot in India’s long-term plans following his impressive performances in the first two T20Is against Bangladesh.

“Varun Chakaravarthy, is he back, big question, because he is making a comeback after three years. In the first match, he probably got one or two wickets on balls that weren’t wicket-taking, which is good. He picked up three wickets. In the second match, he actually bowled better than the first match,” he said.

“He bowled with more confidence and greater consistency. He continuously bowled within the three stumps. The signs thus far are very good. Why do you want to play Varun Chakaravarthy? After two years, the next World Cup will be in India only,” the former India opener added.

Chakravarthy, who had fallen out of favor following lackluster performances in the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, made a remarkable comeback to the Indian team in the ongoing series against Bangladesh, taking five wickets in the first two matches.
