In the third Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, Jasprit Bumrah stole the show for India with a remarkable bowling performance, taking six out of the 10 wickets to help restrict Australia to a mammoth 445-run total in the first innings. Bumrah's five-wicket haul not only surpassed the legendary Kapil Dev's record but also came close to breaking the world record.
It was the second five-wicket haul for Bumrah in the ongoing series in Australia. Earlier in the Perth Test, where he led the team in Rohit Sharma's absence, he picked up a five-wicket haul to match Kapil's feat. Almost three weeks later, Bumrah returned to his best to grab his 12th career fi-fer on Sunday, before finishing with figures of 6 for 76 in the first innings of the Gabba Test.
On Day 3 of the match, he dismissed Mitchell Starc early to pick his sixth wicket, which also saw him complete the milestone of 50 wickets on Australian soil, achieving it in only his 10th appearance in the country since his debut in the 2018/19 tour.
Bumrah hence became the fastest Asian bowler the milestone, going past Kapil, who picked up his 50th wicket in his 11th appearance in Australia, while Pakistan's Sarfraz Nawaz completed it in 12 Tests.
Overall, five other legendary bowlers reached the feat in 10 Test matches, with the list including LR Gibbs, SF Barnes, Richard Hadlee, H Larwood and T Richardson. England's Maurice Tate still holds the record for being the fastest overseas bowler to get to 50 wickets in Australia, having achieved it in only eight matches.
A look at Bumrah's record in AustraliaBumrah, who played his first Test in Australia in 2018, picked 50 wickets in 19 innings at just 17.82, the fifth-best average by a bowler who has at least played 10 innings in Australia, while his strike rate of 42.8 is the best on that list of 132 bowlers.
Among the five venues he has played in Australia, Bumrah enjoyed most success in Melbourne, where he picked 15 wickets in just two matches, including a nine-wicket match haul.
